Nigerian billionaire Dozy Mmobuosi sponsors record-breaking football tournament

Billionaire and football investor Dozy Mmobuosi is sponsoring an expanded and more lucrative football tournament in Nigeria, called the Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup Football Tournament, with a record-breaking prize pool of ₦1.2 billion established for the event.

The tournament will feature 12 top teams from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), each receiving an appearance fee of ₦20 million.

The winning team will walk away with ₦1 billion, while the runners-up will receive ₦200 million.

The decision to expand the tournament was made in response to growing demand from fans and stakeholders for more high-level football action.

Mmobuosi emphasized that the increased funding will allow teams to invest more resources in players, facilities, and infrastructure, attracting top talent to the league and raising the overall standard of football in Nigeria.

The Dozy Mmobuosi Foundation, in partnership with the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and under the auspices of the Nigeria Premier Football League Ltd by Guaranty, will organize the event.

It is worth noting that Mmobuosi is in the advanced stage of purchasing Championship club Sheffield United. His ongoing plans to buy the club are still being scrutinized by the English Football League (EFL).

Conversations between United’s current owner, Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Mmobuosi, a Nigerian fintech entrepreneur, are ongoing. At the same time, the EFL’s hierarchy studies Mmobuosi’s funding and business models.

Recently, Mmobuosi’s company, Tingo Inc, published its latest financial results following an audit by a US-based branch of Deloitte. Although not designed to accelerate the EFL’s decision-making process, members of Mmobuosi’s inner circle believe the figures should lend further credence to his bid.
