The three-time African champions were humbled on home soil four days ago, and they have the chance to set the record straight in Bissau
CD Leganes defender Kenneth Omeruo has expressed confidence in the current crop of Super Eagles players, saying they have enough quality to exact revenge against Guinea-Bissau in Monday’s 2023 AFCON qualifying second-leg tie.
Omeruo, who was a member of the 2013 AFCON-winning squad, stated that the current team is better in terms of quality than the squad that won the tournament.
The Eagles lost the first leg clash 1-0 in Abuja, thanks to Mama Balde’s first-half strike.
However, former Chelsea ace Omeruo believes that the team was unlucky in that game and that they dominated possession and missed many chances. He is confident that the players know what is at stake and are coming to fight for everything.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Omeruo said, “Believe me, we have better players with better quality now than we did when we won the AFCON in 2013, and this is why I believe it’s something we can definitely do. And my role is to do my best on the pitch and try to advise, especially the new players coming in.”
Omeruo added that every mistake made in the first leg would be corrected, and the coaches have been working hard to prepare the team. He believes that the team will be ready for the match on Monday and that they are not here for a draw but to fight for everything.
“The coaches do a great job in training; they make sure the videos are available for us to watch the opponent and tactics, so we know when we are going into the pitch we are ready.
“Like I said, we were unlucky (in the first leg), and we will correct everything that wasn’t done right.”
Nigeria are currently second in Group A but could overtake Guinea-Bissau with a win on Monday. The Eagles arrived in Guinea-Bissau early on Sunday morning via Air Peace.
