Super Eagles: Four reasons why Championship top goalscorer Chuba Akpom merits first call-up

It is time for Nigeria to make the call and summon Chuba Akpom to the Super Eagles squad.

The 27-year-old Middlesbrough striker has been in outstanding form, and his performance this season speaks volumes.

Akpom was born to Nigerian parents in Newham, London. Although he played for England’s youth teams from the U-16 to the U-21 levels, he never featured for the senior team, making him eligible to represent Nigeria.

He declared his readiness to play for the Super Eagles over five years ago but has never been called up.

In this piece, we highlight four reasons why head coach Jose Peseiro can no longer ignore Akpom.

Akpom has become an excellent goalscorer

The first reason is his goalscoring prowess. Akpom has been a prolific scorer this season, netting 22 goals in all competitions.

His 21 Championship goals make him the top scorer in the division. With that kind of form, there’s no doubt he can add something to the Super Eagles attack.

Akpom is in the form of his life

The Middlesbrough forward has been the best striker in the Championship this season by some distance.

Even more importantly, Akpom has been a consistent and reliable goalscoring outlet for Boro all season long.

The former PAOK Salonika ace scored three goals in October, three in November, four in December, three in January, and five in February. He already has two goals in March as he continues to help his team’s promotion push. With such impressive form, it is hard to ignore his credentials.

Akpom is versatile

The ex-Hull City loanee can play as a striker, supporting striker, or attacking midfielder.

His ability to play in various attacking positions makes him a valuable addition to any squad.

He has excelled as an attacking midfielder and can create chances for his teammates as well as score goals.

The Super Eagles need him

The attacking midfield role is an area the Super Eagles have lacked enough top-quality options, and Akpom could help fill that gap.

Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho have been deployed there to mixed effects, but Akpom’s form and versatility could make him the ideal candidate for the role.

In conclusion, Chuba Akpom merits his first Super Eagles call-up. He has shown his class in the Championship, and it’s time to take the next step in his career.

Head coach Jose Peseiro should make the call, and Nigerian fans will be eagerly waiting to see Akpom don the green and white of the Super Eagles.

  • Chuba Akpom is definitely needed in the Super Eagles at this time. He is a consistent and intelligent player. He would be a second striker behind Victor. Chukwueze will be a strong player in the forward line with Victor and Akpom. Another player needed in the team is Folarin.

  • He's been awesome for Boro this year - an absolute joy to watch - I'd be amazed if you don't call him up. His best position is clearly no 10 - he runs the show going forward and then pops up in the box at the right time to (usually) slide one in. Honestly - an absolute revelation of us and if he doesn't play for Nigeria then I'd wonder why not
