Super Eagles-eligible star bags second PFA fan’s POTM award

Akpom has scored 17 goals and contributed one assist in 25 outings for Boro in the domestic league so far this year.

Middlesbrough forward, Chuba Akpom, has once again been named the PFA fans’ Player of the Month for January.

The forward made it to the headlines again after an impressive performance in the month of January, raising his goal tally to 17, and as well leading the Sky Bet Championship scoring chart with three goals ahead of Viktor Gyokeres, who placed second.

The British-Nigerian took home the award for scoring three goals across all competitions in January, continuing his goal-scoring streak into 2023.

In the first game of the year, Riverside outfit defeated Birmingham City 3-1 on the road. Five minutes before the end of time, Akpom beat the goalkeeper to secure the win.

Moreover, the ex-Arsenal star scored the first goal in a 2-0 victory against Watford that helped Boro finish the month in third place.

More also, the 27-year-old scored the sole goal for the North Yorkshire side in a 5-1 loss to Brighton.

Boro forward won the award in January with 25% of the vote, defeating other contenders like Luton Town’s Elijah Adebayo, Bristol City’s Antoine Semenyo, who is currently at Bournemouth, Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki, Burnley’s Ian Maatsen, and Coventry City’s Kasey Palmer to win the prize for the second time in the 2022–23 season campaign.

Nonetheless, despite proclaiming his allegiance to Nigeria, Akpom has yet to play for Nigeria on the international stage. He would, however, be hopeful for a call-up by Jose Peseiro to play in the nation’s African Cup of Nations qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau.
