Super Eagles-eligible forward Akpom stamps his name into Boro history

Chuba Akpom has been on fire in the second tier of the English football league, scoring 19 goals in 23 games.

Super Eagles-eligible forward Chuba Akpom has cemented his place in Middlesbrough’s history book after scoring twice against Queens Park Rangers.

According to reports, the former Arsenal player scored 20 goals for Middlesbrough for the first time since the 1996–1997 season.

The British-Nigerian maintained his stellar play for the Championship team in the 64th and 77th minutes, among which he rose to head in his first goal off of Dan Barlaser’s cross.

Recall that this season, aside from writing his name in Boro’s history book, the former PAOK forward’s outstanding performances has also garnered his other honours, including PFA fan’s POTM for January and Skybet player of the month for December.

With 19 goals, he is five goals ahead of Viktor Gyökeres of Coventry City in the scoring race in the Skybet Championship. Meanwhile, with this, it is safe to say that the 27-year-old is operating at full capacity under Michael Carrick’s direction.

The midfielder will now be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Bernie Slaven, who last scored 21 goals in the second level in 1989–90 in the promotion-winning 1987–88 season when they visit the Hawthorns Stadium to face West Brom.

It would be ideal if the striker continues his success at the national level, but despite pledging his loyalty to represent Nigeria, he is yet to be called up to the side. Nevertheless, this remarkable performance may convince Super Eagles manager Jose Peseiro to give him a call-up this year.
