The former African champions need to avoid defeat in their last group match to seal a spot in the quarterfinals
The Nigerian U-20 national team will battle their Mozambican counterparts at the Suez Canal Stadium in Ismailia for a place in the quarterfinals of the CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations.
Both teams can still qualify for the next phase of the competition despite mixed results in their two previous games.
Nigeria began their campaign at Egypt 2023 with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal in a West African derby. But the Flying Eagles rode their luck on matchday two to record a crucial 1-0 win over wasteful hosts Egypt.
With one win and one loss from those two matches, Flying Eagles have three points heading into Saturday’s clash.
Any result aside from a loss to Mozambique will see the seven-time champions finish as runners-up behind Senegal or as one of the two best third-placed teams.
Mozambique, though, are way more desperate.
The Mambas boast only one point earned in a surprise goalless draw against four-time winners Egypt on matchday one.
Senegal were not as generous as Egypt on matchday two as the Young Teranga Lions handed Mozambique a 3-0 thrashing.
But the South Africans can still advance to the quarterfinals with a win over the unpredictable Flying Eagles.
Nigeria are the most successful nation at the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations with seven titles, two silver medals, and three bronze medals.
But in all their years of dominance, the Flying Eagles never met Mozambique, who are making only their fourth appearance at the tournament.
At the 2021 U20 Afcon, the Mambas finished bottom of Group A after losing all three games, conceding eight goals.
