“He’s unlucky not to score” – Manchester City legend backs Super Eagles-eligible star to rediscover form

The Anglo-Nigerian forward is enjoying a splendid time in Lancashire but he has lost his scoring touch in recent weeks

Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has thrown his support behind Nathan Tella after the forward experienced a slight dip in form.

Tella joined Burnley in the Championship in a season-long loan deal from Premier League club Southampton and has been a dream signing in Lancashire.

The Super Eagles hopeful has scored 14 goals for the Clarets with 12 of those coming in 31 league appearances.

The 23-year-old began February with a bang, netting a brace in the 2-1 defeat of Ipswich and a hat-trick in the demolition of Preston.

But Tella has not scored since, firing blanks in subsequent matches against Watford, Luton, Milwall, and Huddersfield. The former Arsenal trainee, though, claimed an assist in the 4-0 thrashing of Huddersfield at the weekend.

Still, Burnley head coach Vincent Kompany is not worried that Tella has lost his scoring touch in recent weeks.

The Manchester City legend believes the versatile winger is only unlucky in front of goal even as he has become a prominent figure in the Burnley dressing room.

What has been said?

“Nathan [Tella] is already a very mature player. He knows and he gets the side of the game that he always needs to be at his best and if he does not have a bad performance, he’ll still have the right habits every day,” kompany said, as reported by Lancs Live.

“But, at the moment, he’s just unlucky not to score really. If you think about it, we’ve scored a lot of goals and he’s unlucky not to score – but he’s a senior player now amongst us and he does what senior players do.”

Burnley are favourites to gain promotion to the English Premier League at the end of the season, as they currently lead the standing in the Championship.

The Clarets have 76 points from 34 games, 12 more than second-place Sheffield United and 19 more than third-place Middlesbrough with only 12 matches left to play.
