Onyedika played his first-ever Champions League knockout game for Club Brugge but it did not end well
Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika played all 90 minutes for Club Brugge, but he could not prevent them from suffering a 2-0 defeat to Benfica at the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Onyedika made his first-ever appearance in the round of 16 of the UEFA Champions League when Club Brugge played hosts to Portuguese high-flyers Porto. Unfortunately for him, it did not go so well.
The Belgian champions failed to control the game from the start. Benfica gave a good account of themselves in the first half, as they registered eight goal attempts. But they were unable to score.
Denis Odoi scored late in the first half, but it was ruled out for offside. However, Benfica took the initiative in the second half, scoring two goals courtesy of Joao Mario and David Neres.
Onyedika played all 90 minutes in the fixture, but he was unable to totally stamp his feet in midfield. He had 54 touches, two accurate long passes, two interceptions, and won three free-kicks.
He would hope that Club Brugge can turn the tide around when they travel to Portugal for the return leg in three weeks time.
