AFCON qualifiers: New venue and time fixed for Nigeria’s Super Eagles match against Guinea-Bissau

The three-time African champions are scheduled to face the Djurtus over two legs next month

A new venue has been approved for Nigeria’s matchday four meeting with Guinea-Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.

It will be recalled that the match was earlier slated to be played in Morocco after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) refused to grant approval for Guinea-Bissau to host the game on home soil.

The country’s two biggest grounds – Estadio 24 de Setembro and Estadio Lino Correia – failed to meet CAF’s requirements to host international matches.

Guinea-Bissau then embarked on an intensive round of renovation works at one of the stadiums over the past few weeks.

And after a fresh round of inspection by the continent’s apex football body, the Djurtus have been permitted to host the Super Eagles at the Nacional 24 de Setembro Stadium.

The match will kick off at 5 pm (Nigerian time) on Monday, March 27.

Three days before that, Nigeria will play host to Guinea-Bissau in the first leg of the doubleheader at the Moshood Abiola Stadium on March 24.

Nigeria led Group A of the Afcon qualifiers after beating Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe last year.

The former African champions defeated Guinea-Bissau 2-0 the last time both teams met at the Africa Cup of Nations group stages in Cameroon last year.

Real Sociedad forward Umar Sadiq and Salernitana defender William Teoost-Ekong got the goals for the Super Eagles inside the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia in Garoua.
