“That one hurt a bit”- Super Eagles star speaks on being rejected by English clubs

Many current stars must have made contact with English clubs in some capacity, but they may have been rejected for various reasons, including a belief that they were not good enough.

Nigerian International, Calvin Bassey, has named Premier League clubs that turned him down during his ascent to stardom.

The Nigerian piqued the attention of the world with his incredible performance as a defender during his time with Glasgow Rangers.

The Super Eagles full-back explains that not being noticed has been a thing in his life, but proving people wrong has been the best solution to it.

“Being the underdog has been a constant theme in my career,” he said, as quoted by The Telegraph.

He, however further revealed how he had trials with Charlton and got rejected.

“The hardest part was probably Charlton at 14 or 15. I had trials twice and the second time I felt I had a chance but it wasn’t to be. I just thought ‘how can I go to the same club twice and get rejected?’ That one hurt a bit. It’s a bit sore.

“They didn’t think I would be where I am today. Rejection is a part of the game, but I’ve always had that desire to prove the people that doubted me wrong.” he continued.

However, in his track history to the top, it should be noted that Bassey got a chance with Leicester, playing a couple of games for them in 3 seasons. And however, got interests from some other Premier League clubs. But, perhaps his fate was already decided.

“I told my agent about it. It was timely really as my contract was running out. Leicester wanted to keep hold of me but I felt I was ready to make that next step and play men’s football.

“ I knew I was ready and couldn’t see the opportunity with Leicester at the time. They were flying with the likes of Ben Chilwell and Christian Fuchs, the competition was very high.” Says the Super Eagles.

The 23-year-old’s time was up in Scotland last summer, and his move to the Netherlands was another step in his professional development.
