For over three months last year, the Nigeria international was without a club before he joined La Deportiva on a free transfer
Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali is Ponferradina’s best player in the first half of the 2022/2023 season.
According to La Nueva Crónica, Kelechi Nwakali has accumulated more favourability points than any member of the Ponferradina squad after the round of 21 games.
It would be recalled that Nwakali joined Ponferradina on a free transfer in July three and half months after Huesca controversially terminated his contract.
Nwakali wasted little time in settling down at Ponferradina and he has been a consistent feature in midfield for La Deportiva.
The Arsenal academy product has played in 16 of his side’s 21 league matches scoring once and providing another assist.
A hamstring injury, however, knocked Nwakali out of action in November, causing him to miss the games against Burgos, Levante, Lugo, and Mirandes.
Recent reports suggest that the 24-year-old is well on the road to full recovery and could be in line for a return to action when Ponferradina take on Villarreal B on Friday in a Segunda Division fixture.
However, Nwakali’s brilliance has not translated to positive results for Ponferradina as coach David Gallego’s men are currently stuck in the relegation zone.
La Deportiva boast only 21 points in 21 games to sit on the 20th position in the 22-team table.
Although, only goal difference separates Ponferradina and Racing Santander in the safety of 18th position.
