Nigerian players abroad: Simon inspires Nantes to victory; Success’ effort is insufficient for Udinese

Sunday came with mixed results for some Super Eagles stars in Europe

Super Eagles forward Moses Simon inspired Nantes to a 3-0 victory against nine-man Montpellier at the Stade de la Mosson.

Simon and his Nantes side were looking to continue an impressive four-game unbeaten run when they traveled to Montpellier.

Super Eagles forward Simon was handed a starting shirt by manager Alex Kombouare.

Montpellier were the better side in the opening minutes, but the game turned on its head late in the second half after Wahbi Khazri got a red card because of a dangerous tackle.

Nantes then took advantage, as Andrei Girotto opened the scoring for them just before the break.

In the second half, the Yellow canaries took it a notch higher, and Simon was masterful on the left wing. He registered 41 touches, two key passes, and six crosses.

Elye Wahi received the second red card for Montpellier in the 66th minute, and Nantes quickly capitalized on it. Goals from Mostafa Mohamed and Ludovic Blas ensured that the game ended 3-0 for Nantes. The result leaves them in 13th place on the Ligue 1 log.

 

Meanwhile, Super Eagles forward Isaac Success supplied the assist for Udinese’s first goal against Bologna, but it was not enough, as they still lost 2-1.

Success picked out Beto who was lurking in the box with a long pass, and the Portuguese striker received the pass and slammed the ball in front close range to give Udinese the lead after ten minutes.

However, second-half goals from Nicola Sansone and Stefan Posch ensured it ended 2-1 in favour of Bologna.

 

Elsewhere in Belgium, Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika had a great shift in midfield for Club Brugge to help them to a 1-1 victory over Anderlecht.

Casper Nielsen scored the opener for Club Brugge in the 68th minute, but Club Brugge could not hold out for the win, as Brandon Mechele scored an own goal for Anderlecht to ensure it ended level after 90 minutes.

Onyedika had a great game for Club Brugge. He registered 61 touches, seven accurate long balls, won ten of 14 duels, five tackles, two interceptions, and two clearances. The former Midtjylland man was one of the best players on the pitch.

The result leaves Club Brugge in 4th place on the Jupiler league table.
