“Let’s focus on the future”- Bassey confident about Ajax’s chances of retaining Eredivisie title

Ajax have not been at their best this season, but Bassey is confident that they can turn the tide

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey believes that Ajax still have a good chance of retaining their Eredivisie title despite their poor start to the season.

Ajax have been a shadow of themselves this season. The team lost some of their best legs last season, with Lisandro Martinez, Antony, and Mazraoui all leaving last summer.

Also, Alfred Schreuder just took over at the helms of affairs at the club after Erik Ten Hag left for Manchester United.

Bassey just arrived at Amsterdam last summer and he has been a consistent starter at the club.

Still, the Godenzonen have struggled. They have uncharacteristically won just nine of their 16 games this season. They sit five points behind Eredivisie leaders PSV Eindhoven.

Even in the Champions League, Ajax were sent packing after suffering four losses in six games, in a group that had Napoli, Celtic, and Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Bassey believes that his side can bounce back from their disappointing start to the season and win the league.

“We have confidence in our coach and we want to show that we are not done here. We have a lot of quality in the team and we are not worried,” Bassey said as per voetbalzone.

“Let’s put the first half of the season behind us and focus on the future. We still have eighteen games to go.

“Every game is a final for us. We have to win them all, so I don’t feel any extra pressure”

Ajax play leaders PSV Eindhoven on Sunday, and a loss could be catastrophic for them. Bassey would look to put in a good shift in defense to help his side claim a result.
