“He’s a very good person” – Victor Osimhen’s former captain lauds Super Eagles star

The Nigeria striker has no equal in front of goal in the Italian top flight this term, attracting applause from home and abroad

Former Napoli captain Lorenzo Insigne has heaped praises on Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen for his exceptional displays in the Italian Serie A.

Insigne and Osimhen were teammates at Napoli until the Italian international left the Diego Maradona Stadium last summer to begin a new adventure in Major League Soccer with FC Toronto.

While Insigne was a key figure in Naples, Osimhen only managed ten and 14 league goals in his first and second seasons respectively with Il Partenopei.

But Osimhen has been a different beast since the start of the 2022/23 season, netting 13 league goals with the entire second half of the campaign still to play.

Only Nigerian teammate and Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman comes anywhere close with 11 goals. The rest of the chasing pack is led by Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez and Spezia’s M’Bala Nzola with nine goals.

It is a fantastic improvement for Osimhen whose effort is leading Napoli’s charge for their first Serie A title in 33 years.

Insigne is delighted that Osimhen, who he considers a great human off the pitch, has become a lot better also on it.

And the 31-year-old credits Napoli manager Luciano Spalletti for his impact on helping the Nigerian striker become a phenomenon.

What has been said?

“Osimhen is improving visibly and his potential is coming out,” Insigne said, as per Tutto Atalanta.

“Spalletti is enhancing his unique characteristics such as athleticism in the air, progression, and coordination. I’m really happy for Victor, he’s a very good person.”

Osimhen last appeared in the league on January 21 for Napoli against Salernitana. In that game, he found the back of the net for his team in their 2-0 win. He has now scored in three Serie A appearances in a row.

The 24-year-old will look to continue that rich form when Napoli next face Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma on January 29.
