The Nigerian under-20 team is gearing up for the AFCON tournament after missing the event in 2021.
Ladan Bosso, the Flying Eagles coach, has sent 10 players home due to age discrepancies and falsified documents.
The 35-man squad was invited by the Nigerian Under-20 coach yesterday in advance of the AFCON competition that will take place next month.
However, the majority of the players on the list are from academies rather than the Nigerian League One and the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) (NLO).
A member of the team’s backroom staff revealed to Own Goal that the majority of the elite league’s players were discovered to be “above age” and some had issues with their documents in response to the question of why NPFL players failed to dominate the team.
However, according to owngoal, six of the players who had dual passports with different ages were also sent packing.
It has been said that the screening, scheduled for Monday, January 9, 2023, will involve a careful examination of his boys as he gets them ready for the competition.
Most of these players who were impressive but “above age” were screened out as the goal is still to assemble a team for the future.
Egypt will host the event, which is scheduled to take place from February 19 to March 11, 2023.
