The South Americans ended a 36-year wait for the biggest prize in world football in astonishing style inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium
Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro has sent an adoring congratulatory message to Argentina after La Albiceleste lifted the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar
Argentina and France played out a thrilling 3-3 draw after 120 minutes of football inside the Lusail Iconic Stadium before the South Americans overcame the defending champions 4-2 on penalties.
Lionel Messi handed Argentina the lead via the penalty spot before Angel Di Maria doubled the advantage for Lionel Scaloni’s side heading into the halftime break.
However, when all looked lost for the French, PSG forward Kylian Mbappe scored twice in the final quarter of an hour to drag the encounter into extra time.
Lionel Messi made it 3-2 for Argentina in the second period of extra-time but Mbappe netted a late spot-kick to force the match into penalties.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved Kingsley Coman’s shot and Tchouameni missed the target as only Mbappe and Kolo Muani scored for France.
But Messi, Dybala, Paredes, and Montiel all beat Hugo Lloris in the French goal as Argentina claimed their first World Cup title since 1986.
Celebrating with the Argentines, Super Eagles coach Peseiro wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations Argentina on winning your third World Cup! It was an exciting game, what an incredible match! You deserve every minute of this title, well done!”
After surprisingly losing their opening match to Saudi Arabia, Argentina defeated Mexico, Poland, Australia, Netherlands (on penalties), and Croatia before meeting France in the final.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winning star Mutiu Adepoju has applauded Argentina for their winning mentality that powered their victory over France on Sunday evening.
