No show Adeyemi: Nigerian descent makes no impact as Germany crash out of FIFA World Cup

The young attacker had high hopes of conquering the world with the European giants, but that dream came crashing down on Thursday night

Former champions Germany are out of the 2022 FIFA World Cup despite beating Costa Rica 4-2 in their last Group E match at the Al Bayt Stadium on Thursday.

Germany needed to win big and hope Spain avoided a defeat to Japan in the other group match to advance to the Round of 16 of Qatar 2022.

The Germans got the job done, albeit in dramatic fashion but had their hard work undone by Spain’s stunning 2-1 loss to Japan.

The 1990 world champions took two players of Nigerian descent to Qatar: Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala and Borussia Dortmund youngster Karim Adeyemi.

Musiala was one of the best players of the group stage, his brilliance and technical ability a crucial component of Germany’s attacking play.

No player in Group E completed more take-ons or created more chances than Musiala at the 2022 World Cup.

Adeyemi, on the other hand, failed to make a World Cup appearance, with manager Hansi Flick placing his trust in trusted legs.

They largely delivered, though, as Kai Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug came off the bench to help turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 triumph in the last quarter of the tie against the Costa Ricans.

It was, however, not enough as Spain and Japan progressed to the Round of 16, leaving the Germans to lick their wounds.
