Nigerian strikers abroad: Maja can’t be caged; Nwakaeme nets worldie in Saudi Arabia

Some Nigerian strikers were in action for their clubs on Friday, and some of them excelled

Nigerian strikers Josh Maja and Anthony Nwakaeme scored to spur their clubs to victory on Friday.

Super Eagles striker Maja returned to action with Bordeaux when they played hosts to Sochaux in their 17th game of the Ligue 2 season.

Bordeaux have been high-flyers this season, but the game was a proper test for their mettle as Sochaux was above them with two points.

However, Bordeaux showed their quality very early. Super Eagles striker Maja stepped up to the plate on the half-hour mark to put Bordeaux in front. The 24-year-old attacker showed great awareness to latch onto a ball in the box and fired home from close range to give Bordeaux a 1-0 lead.

Les Girondins did not have to wait long for their second goal. Two minutes after Maja’s goal, Zuriko Davitashvili doubled Bordeaux, giving them a two-goal lead going into the break.

Franck Kanoute pulled one back for Sochaux in the 59th minute to try and spark up a comeback. Unfortunately for the visitors, that was all they could muster, as Bordeaux ran out 2-1 winners.

The win takes Bordeaux to second place in Ligue 2. For Maja, it was his eighth goal in 15 Ligue 2 games.

Elsewhere in Saudi Arabia, Nigerian striker Anthony Nwakaeme scored a peach of a goal for Al Feiha in their 2-0 victory at Al Fateh.

Nwakaeme scored a glorious goal last time out for his side when they defeated Al Taee 2-1.

The 33-year-old forward produced an identical performance against Al Fateh. After 76 minutes without a goal, Nwakaeme took the law into his hands and went on a mazy run, leaving defenders for dead, before striking a wicked shot into the bottom right corner to give his side the lead.

Al Fateh pushed for an equalizer, but Al Feiha held on strong. Saud Zidan scored the second for the visitors to ensure it ended 2-0 in favour of Nwakaeme’s Al Feiha.

Nwakaeme now has six goals in nine Saudi Arabian Professional League games.
