Augustine Eguavoen sets 2026 World Cup target for the Super Eagles

Ex-Super Eagles coach Augustine Eguavoen has revealed his plans for the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

In an interview with Brila FM, the now-Super Eagles technical director said that he intended to send the Nigerian national team to the next World Cup.

According to Soccernet.ng, the Sapele native guided the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the AFCON 2021 competition, where they were eliminated by Cameroon and their Tunisian counterparts in Garoua.

Prior to their AFCON elimination, though, there may have been some chance for them to qualify for the World Cup. That is until they came across the Black Stars of Ghana, who gave it all they had to defeat the Super Eagles of Nigeria and advance to the World Cup.

After the underwhelming performance, the 57-year-old, Eguavoen, quit and was subsequently succeeded by the Portuguese manager, Jose Peseiro.

In an interview, the former Enyimba coach admitted fault for the nation’s poor performance and failure to qualify for the World Cup.

“I failed to take the country to the world tournament when I had the opportunity to; I was trusted with the responsibility,” he said

He did, however, admit that the absence of the Nigerian national team from the World Cup had prevented him from seeing many of the tournament’s games.

“For this reason, I have only been able to watch very little of the games as it makes me even sadder.”

According to a previous report, The NFF retained and approved the former Gent player as the technical director, who promised to use his position to help the Nigerian Super Eagles qualify for the upcoming World Cup.

“Well, as head of the technical department, I will just have to start planning now and make sure that Nigeria gets to the next world cup,”  Eguavoen said.

  • Mr Eguavon, you know, personally, l like you. I jumped for joy when Emmanuel Amunike was brought in to work with you the last time. to take Nigeria to the ongoing Katar 2022 World Cup.; But unfortunately, you guys failed woefully and l still cannot get over the pain.

In Nigeria, we like taking big big titles and living on coocoo land when, in real terms, we cannot prove ourselves when the chips are down.

Mr Eguavon, do you know why the Eagles failed to qualify for Katar 2022?

    1) Generally, these set of players (apart from Osimhen and maybe 1 or 2 others) is the weakest Eagles team ever! They lack fighting spirit and the team is very very very very very uncoordinated. They always look frightened against every opponent, even against African opposition. Big names no longer matter in football. They play kindergarten football.

    2) You are not TECHNICALLY ADEPT enough. We love you but l believe you need to take a course on modern football techniques. instead of boasting about the next World Cup.

i believe you are a little bit old school and still living in the past. A 3 - 6 month's course would be enough and there's so much for you to learn about the game.

Finally, l believe if you take a refresher course ( l don't mean your previous certificates), all will be well.

    Thank you, sir!

  • We don't need you near any of our national teams. Except for the women's teams that you have not handled. You have failed even with all the club sides you have coached, so would you be given another chance to fail us. Even as Technical Director, I don't think you fit the bill. If you like go and take all the refresher courses of this world, you will still fail because you can't give what you don't have....
