“Some moments in football aren’t fair” – Super Eagles skipper Troost-Ekong sympathises with injured Watford teammate

Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has sent lifting words to Watford teammate Dan Gosling following the Englishman’s awkward injury on Saturday.

Former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling suffered an Achilles injury in the closing stages of Watford’s Championship clash with Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

The 32-year-old could be set for a lengthy spell on the sidelines, hurting William Troost-Ekong.

Gosling and Troost-Ekong were key members of the Watford team that gained promotion to the Premier League in 2021.

But the two players were largely frozen out during the Hornets’ ill-fated EPL adventure that ended in their relegation.

The arrival of Croatian manager Slaven Bilic has brought back the good fortunes for Troost-Ekong and Gosling, with both players enjoying consistent runs in the Watford first eleven.

And it was particularly saddening for the Nigerian to see his comrade suffer an injury at a time when he had become even more influential for the Golden Boys.

“Some moments in football aren’t fair and yesterday was overshadowed with one of those,” Troost-Ekong said as per Bournemouth Echo.

“It really takes you back when I’ve seen Dan Gosling work harder than anyone day in day out for months without the credit/reward he deserved before getting back playing weekly again, making the difference! That is what a ‘key’ player and character in a team REALLY is.

“We’re all behind you and if there is anyone who I’m sure will be back stronger from this it is you mate.”

William Troost-Ekong will turn his attention from club duties to national assignments this week.

The former Udinese centre-back has been included in the Nigerian squad that will face Portugal in an international friendly in Lisbon on Thursday, November 17.
