An insider at Ajax Amsterdam has questioned the price tag of the Nigerian defender whom he believes will improve but has been overvalued
Freek Jansen has said Calvin Bassey May have been overpaid for on the strength of his opening games at Ajax.
Bassey has had a topsy-turvy beginning to the season, earning a red card on his debut but is bouncing back solidly from that disappointment to earn praises.
In the last four games, Ajax are struggling badly and are shipping in the goals like their red jerseys, with four goals already conceded in eleven games.
The pairing of two young center-halves, Jurien Timber and Bassey has come under the microscope and the former Rangers man is getting the kicks.
An insider at the club Jansen said on Pak Schaal Podcast, via Ajax Showtime : “With Bassey you can already conclude that Ajax has paid the absolute top prize for him with 23 million.
“Given his current qualities, it would have made more sense to pay five to ten million euros for him.
“He still has a long way to go when it comes to football. Perhaps that will still happen”.
Jansen’s statement follows Marciano Vink who also stated the areas the defender needs to improve.
Ajax have a solid tradition of bringing players through but with €27.5m splashed on the Nigerian to replace Lisandro Martinez, there are doubts over the wisdom of the deal. Time will tell.
