“Nobody wants to be at the receiving end of it” – Super Eagles star laments biggest Champions League defeat in Ajax history

The Nigerian defender could not rescue the Eredivisie champions from the club’s worst defeat in European football

Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has confessed that he endured a tough week following Ajax’s embarrassing loss to Napoli in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Bassey saw every minute of action as Eredivisie champions Ajax were outclassed 6-1 by Napoli on matchday three of the UEFA Champions League.

It was Ajax’s biggest defeat in Champions League history, exposing Bassey and his teammates to criticism.

Asked at the weekend how the rest of his week turned out after such a massive loss, Bassey responded, “How do you think it would be after that? Of course, it was not nice. Nobody wants to be on the receiving end of it.

“But the most important thing for us is to try to wipe it clear and go because we do have quality in our team.

“We showed it a lot more near the beginning of the season, the quality we have and how we can play. It’s just about getting back to that level.”

After enduring four games without a win, including losses to Liverpool, AZ Alkmaar, and Napoli, Ajax returned to winning ways on Saturday.

Bassey scored his first goal for Ajax since joining from Glasgow Rangers in the summer as the Dutch giants bashed Volendam 4-2 away from home.

Next up for the reigning Eredivisie champions is a trip to the Diego Maradona Stadium to honour a date with Napoli.

In Naples, Bassey and Ajax will get the chance to redeem their battered reputation and rescue their Champions League hopes.
