“He’s got something special” – Nigerian legend Austin Okocha showers praise on Super Eagles star

Accolades continue to flow in the direction of the Nigeria international midfielder following a brilliant start to the campaign

Super Eagles legend Austin Okocha has voiced his admiration for the improved performances of Alex Iwobi for Everton this season.

Alex Iwobi struggled for more than two years at Goodison Park, with the Nigerian failing to impress different managers and fans since joining from Arsenal in 2019.

But the arrival of Frank Lampard has brought the best out of the Super Eagles midfielder.

Iwobi is gradually becoming a Goodison Park favourite and is one of the first names on manager Frank Lampard’s team sheet these days.

1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner Austin Okocha is Iwobi’s uncle and mentor.

And while there was never a doubt about the younger Nigerian’s quality, Okocha is delighted that his nephew is getting to show his worth consistently in the Premier League.

“It’s great to see him playing to his potential,” Okocha told Everton Live.

“We all knew that he’s got something special, but it’s taken him a little while to settle down and I also think playing under a great manager, who really wants to improve his game and has been playing him in his right position has made a big difference.

“Alex is down to earth. You can’t expect a player to give any more than he does. Whether it’s going well for him or not, you can guarantee he’ll put sweat on his jersey, and that’s what you want from a player – to give 100 per cent at any given time. That, for me, is the minimum requirement for a player and Alex gives that every time.

“I’ve always said to him that he can be too honest! But [playing in different positions] shows he is willing to sacrifice for the team, even if that affects his personal goals and performances.

“I’m glad to see him playing regularly in his natural position, where he can get on the ball and make things happen.
“I think Everton are enjoying the best of Alex now and we’re all delighted that he’s playing well.”

Okocha is not the only one impressed with Iwobi’s resurgence.

Former Manchester United hero Rio Ferdinand has also showered praises on the Nigerian after he scored a stunning curler against the Red Devils at the weekend.
