Fans, critics, and pundits have been in agreement that the Nigeria international has been at the top of his game since the turn of the year
Former Bayern Munich and Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has heaped loads of praises on Nigerian midfielder Alex Iwobi for his brilliant performances for Everton.
Iwobi is no longer the inconsistent winger who failed to impress several managers since arriving at Goodison Park in 2019.
Now almost unrecognisable as a number eight, the former Arsenal playmaker regularly churns out top-level displays for Everton.
Adding quality to his energy and industry, Iwobi has provided more key passes from open play than all but three players in the English Premier League.
Only Liverpool’s Mo Salah (26), Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne (20), and Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli (19) rank higher than Iwobi (18) on the open-play key-pass board.
And at the weekend, Iwobi netted his first goal of the season in Everton’s 2-1 loss to Man United to add a goal to his arsenal of weapons.
And former England international Owen Hargreaves could not hide his delight at the impressive Nigerian.
“He is a revelation playing in there; he so much more explosive and powerful,” said Hargreaves, as per The Punch.
“I think that’s what he gives you when he plays in here. Initially, he was always a winger, there is a transition, and Iwobi joins in, but he doesn’t have to. Back in the day, you would see players drop in there and force them.
“It was a fantastic finish. Under Frank, he has provided great energy in that midfield and if he can add goals to his game, then he’s undroppable.”
Owen Hargreaves is not the only retired footballer who has applauded Iwobi in recent times.
Super Eagles legend Austin Okocha also joined former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand in extolling the qualities of the Nigerian midfielder.
