Champions League: Mukairu features in Copenhagen drubbing at Manchester City

The Lions traveled to England intending to get a result, but they were tamed by the rampant Cityzens at the Etihad

Nigerian forward Paul Mukairu played 24 minutes for Copenhagen in their 5-0 demolition at Manchester City.

Copenhagen locked horns with Manchester City in their first-ever meeting in the Champions League.

Getting a result at the Etihad was always going to be a difficult task for the Danish champions, as under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, Manchester City are always tough customers.

Copenhagen boss Jacob Neestrup left Nigerian attacker Mukairu on the bench, opting for Viktor Claesson instead.

Manchester did not waste time stamping their authority in the game, as early chances fell to Cancelo and Alvarez. Unfortunately, they were unable to convert.

Nonetheless, Copenhagen could not hold on for long, as in-form Erling Braut Haaland showed grit and finished calmly in the box to make it 1-0 for the Premier League champions.

Guardiola’s men dominated play and ensured they blocked everything Copenhagen tried to instigate.

Haaland got his brace in the 32nd minute, to put City two to the good. And just before halftime, Davit Khocholava scored an own goal to give Manchester City a three-goal lead.

The second half was identical to the first with Copenhagen constantly on the back foot. Their problems were compounded when Marko Stamenic conceded a penalty after a foul in the box. Riyad Mahrez took no prisoners, as he dispatched the kick calmly to make it four for Manchester City.

Mukairu was introduced into the game in the 66th minute, but he was unable to change his side’s fortunes. The 22-year-old had nine touches, completed two dribbles, and won three of his duels.

Alvarez scored the final goal of the game in the 76th minute to complete the 5-0 demolition of Copenhagen.

The result means that the Lions will sit rock bottom of the table, with just one point after three games.
