Super Falcons end 20-year goalless streak against USA

The last time the Super Eagles scored against the United States Women’s National Team was in 1999 when the Americans came from behind to thrash the Falcons 7-1

The United States’ women’s team continued their streak against African opposition and extended their unbeaten to 7 games.

They’ve also extended their unbeaten streak at home to 71 matches.

United States have now defeated Nigeria five times and South Africa two times with Tuesday’s fixture more closely fought.

The Americans took the lead through a Tosin Demehin own goal in the 24th minute before fighting back in the second half.

The first Falconets left full-back Rofiat Imuran featured from start to finish in the pulsating encounter in Washington DC. Second half substitute, Uchenna Kanu scored the equaliser in the 50th minute before Rose Lavelle’s header shot the US back into the lead in the 66th minute.

The Super Falcons pushed for an equaliser but didn’t get it as they fell to a second defeat to the United States on their American tour.

Most games between both sides have ended in narrow scorelines with last weekend’s 4-0 loss one of the highest ever recorded.

The Super Falcons will be at next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as one of Africa’s four already settled representatives.

Recall that the Super Falcons came 4th at the last WAFCON.
