At the 2002 AFCON in Mali up till the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia in 2004, Cameroon wore a sleeveless jersey which was later banned; they had however stolen headlines with the rare concept for a football shirt
Alex Iwobi has thrown a rare taunt at Cameroon’s sleeveless jersey in the early 2000s.
Participating in a game on Super Sport’s social media channel where he got to rate the jerseys of various African countries in the 1990s down to the 2000s, Iwobi said the Cameroon jersey was the best based on the reason behind the concept.
He, however, added that he doesn’t like it for himself as he likes shirts and wants to be associated with football.
“This is Ghana?… I would have never thought this is Ghana, you know, it looks crazy, it is bright, it is loud, it is a big statement, you have to play well if you wear this though.”
“Which year is this” Iwobi asked when he was shown a photo of Nigeria’s Atlanta’ 96 jersey.
He is told 96 and said: “That is the year I was born but this is nice, definitely I will wear this, I will wear with jeans. He added: “We [Nigeria] have come a long way [in terms of jerseys] but this one, I will wear it 100 percent.”
When shown South Africa’s jersey, he said “I like this, it is loud though but I like the kit.”
Ivory Coast’s jersey in 1997 saw Iwobi completely lacking ideas and he admitted: “I don’t know what nationality this is, is it orange in colour?”
“Noo… I would have never guessed that, this is loud though.”
Cameroon’s famous sleeveless jersey got Iwobi laughing as it did everyone who has ever seein it: “This is the best, and the concept for it was spot on because it was very hot [during the competition], so it was good to wear this, I like the shirt man…”
When asked if he would wear it on a hot summer day, he said; ”I don’t want to associate with basketball, I want to associate with football”
