The Nigeria international has risen from the fringes to become a key clog in the wheels at Goodison Park
Everton have begun moves to hand Alex Iwobi a contract extension following his brilliant performances over the past few months.
Iwobi struggled under previous Everton bosses, including Marco Silva, Rafa Benitez, and Carlo Ancelotti.
The Nigeria international faced criticisms from fans and pundits, with many believing him to be a flop. He joined the Toffees from Arsenal in a multi-million-pound move in the summer of 2019.
But the arrival of Frank Lampard in the second half of the last campaign has seen a complete turnaround in fortunes for the Super Eagles star.
The English manager has deployed Iwobi’s versatility, with the Nigerian playing as a winger, full-back, wing-back, and playmaker.
But Iwobi has settled down to a central midfield role this term. From there, the 26-year-old has produced consistently excellent performances, winning over even his harshest critics.
At the weekend, Iwobi delivered the assist for Neal Maupay to score the winner for Everton in their 1-0 defeat of West Ham at Goodison – the Toffees’ first win of the season.
The assist was also Iwobi’s third for Everton’s last four goals in all competitions, highlighting his importance to the club’s cause.
And Everton are wasting no time in extending the midfielder’s contract, according to Liverpool Echo.
Iwobi’s current contract does not expire until June 2024. Still, Everton are not taking any chances, with calls beginning to grow for the Arsenal youth academy product to return to the Gunners.
