Kwara United to relocate to Lagos for CAF Confederations Cup

The Afonja Warriors qualified for CAF’s second-tier competition through the backdoor, but they will not be able to play their games on home soil

Nigeria Professional Football League side Kwara United will adopt the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos for all their home games in the upcoming CAF Confederations Cup.

Kwara United were handed the 2022/23 Confederations Cup ticket due to the NFF’s inability to meet CAF’s deadline for the submission of continental representatives.

In the past, the winners of the Nigerian FA Cup got an automatic slot in the Confederations Cup preliminaries. However, as the Afonja Warriors finish 4th on the NPFL table, they got the nod to represent Nigeria on the continent.

Nonetheless, according to reports from NPFL News, Kwara United are set to adopt the Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos as their home ground for the 2022/2023 CAF Confederations Cup.

The reason for the club’s decision is that the Ilorin Township Stadium does not meet CAF’s standards. In fact, only six stadiums in Nigeria meet the continent’s football-running body’s standards.

The Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo; Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Edo State;  Enyimba International Stadium, Aba; Stephen Keshi Memorial Stadium, in Delta State; and the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja; and the Mobolaji Johnson stadium in Lagos.

The Afonja Warriors would have to make do with the 26,000-capacity Mobolaji Johnson Stadium in Lagos.

Kwara United play their first fixture against AS Douanes on the 9th of September. Then they travel for the second leg which takes place in Senegal nine days later.
