Former Tottenham forward Steven Bergwijn has been jolted to prominence at Ajax but is not surprised by that
Calvin Bassey is called ‘Big Shirley’ by some of his friends and supporters and the player has revealed how he got his nickname.
In a game called ‘Who is it?’ on Ajax’s YouTube channel, the former Rangers star explained why he’s called “Big Shirley” to Bergwijn.
He explained that he shares the same surname with Welsh singer, Shirley Bassey and his friends decided to call him by the nickname as a result. This caught Bergwijn amused and looked surprising to him.
Shirley Veronica Bassey is not related to Calvin Bassey but they have a Nigerian link as the 85-year-old singer’s father hailed from Nigeria.
She is the first Welsh singer to break into the UK Charts and is revered as one of the best singers in Britain with many awards in her bag.
She had a BBC documentary named ‘Shirley’ produced to tell her story in 2011.
Calvin Bassey also described Ajax Serbian captain Dusan Tadic as a great role model, great player and captain while also revealing he will name his book “Everything is Possible” if he ever writes one.
