“En route legendary status” – Ex-Super Eagles coach hails Nigeria’s record-making Commonwealth Games speed-queen

The 1994 Africa Cup of Nations winner has been left bewildered by the achievement of the young woman rewriting the Athletics record books

Former Super Eagles head coach Augustine Eguavoen believes unrivalled Nigerian hurdler Tobi Amusan is on her way to becoming a legend of the sport.

Eguavoen’s latest praise of Amusan came after the 25-year-old speedster powered to the gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Amusan, only a few days ago, set a new world record on the way to winning Nigeria’s first gold medal in the 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon, the United States.

The track queen took that brilliant form to Birmingham, UK, and on Sunday morning, she ran a new Games record of 12.30s to ensure another podium finish for Nigeria.

The Nigerian Amazon outran Bahamas’ Devynne Charlton (12.58secs), who took silver and England’s Cindy Sember (12.59secs) who took bronze.

With the win, Amusan becomes the first world 100m hurdle champion to win Commonwealth gold and the first Nigerian athlete to do the same.

Impressed with Amusan’s dominance, Super Eagles legend Eguavoen believes Amusan is destined for greatness.

While posting the hurdler’s race, Eguavoen wrote on his Twitter account: “Tobi Amusan en route legendary status.”

Aside from Eguavoen, current Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro is also a big fan of Amusan.

Another Commonwealth gold for Amusan?

In what has turned out to be a Super Sunday, Amusan has also won her second gold medal – in the 4X100m – at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

Moments after her hurdles final race, Amusan was drafted into the Nigeria 4X100m relay race, replacing Joy Udo-Gabriel.

During the final, Amusan started the lead leg and, with the trio of Favour Ofili, Rosemary Chukwuma, and Grace Nwokocha, helped Nigeria win the race in a new African record of 42.10s.
