The Super Falconets cemented their place at the top of Group C with an outstanding victory against Canada
The Super Falconets of Nigeria had to come back from a goal down to beat Canada thanks to goals from Esther Onyenezide and Chioma Olise.
Nigeria had already won their opening two games of the competition, with brilliant victories against France and South Korea. They just needed a draw in their final game against The South Korean ladies to seal their spot at the summit of group C.
The Super Falconets started on the wrong foot as a goalkeeping mistake from Oyono granted the Canadians a chance, which they converted to take the lead after just four minutes.
However, the Nigerian Under-20 ladies picked themselves up. They put Canada under a lot of pressure and they finally cracked in the 20th minute.
Nigeria was awarded a penalty after the referee blew for handball in the Canadian box. Onynezide was on hand to send the ball home from the spot.
The Nigerian ladies continue with their relentless play, and they were awarded another penalty after Mercy Idoko was brought down by a Canadian player. And Onyenezide did not take any prisoners, as she slammed the ball home to ensure Nigeria took a 2-1 lead into the break.
The game cooled off in the second half, albeit Canada looked dangerous in the closing embers. Nonetheless, the Super Falconets showed superiority and held on.
Chioma Olise then put the icing on the cake in extra time, as she turned in a cross from Rofiat to ensure it ended 3-1 in Alajuela.
Nigeria will square off against the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
