WAFCON 2022: Waldrum retracts criticism of Nigerian media

The Super Falcons boss made some unsavory comments at the last post-match conference, but he has been called to order

Super Falcons boss Randy Waldrum has apologized for his unsavory criticism of the Nigerian media at the last post-match conference in the game against Botswana.

Nigeria were disappointing in their opening fixture of the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nation as they lost 2-1 to South Africa.

The players struggled to complete passes between themselves. The attack was nothing to write home about, as it lacked cohesion and purpose.

However, the team produced a more improved display in their second game against Botswana. The Super Falcons were outstanding, pegging back the Mares for most embers of the game. In fact, the 2-0 result flattered Botswana, as it easily could have been 4-0.

Nonetheless, after the game, instead of the players, Waldrum stole the spotlight. The American said that the Nigerian media is ‘very negative’.

This came after Nigerian journalists reported that Waldrum refused to let journalists interact with the Super Falcons stars.

However, according to OgaNla Media, the NFF has called Waldrum to order, causing the 65-year-old to tender an apology.

 

“The comments are regrettable and I withdraw them in entirety,” Waldrum said as per OgaNla media.

“I hold the media everywhere, including Nigeria, in high regard and I only wish they could be a little more empathetic to us when we lose or draw matches.”

 

When teams win games, they are praised to the high heavens. But when they lose, the fans and media have the right to criticize them.

Whilst some criticism may be unsavory, the onus lies on the coach and players to filter the wheat from the shaft.

The Super Falcons are record holders of the Women’s Championship, winning nine of eleven. And with the quality available, Nigeria should tower head and shoulders above most teams, albeit upsets could happen.
