The Nigerian midfielder was controversially sacked at his old club, but he has made a comeback
Super Eagles midfielder Kelechi Nwakali played his first game since the 19th of January in Ponferradina’s 2-1 loss to Valladolid.
Nwakali was having a decent run with Huesca in the Spanish Laliga2 last season until January when he attended the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon with Nigeria.
Days after the Super Eagles were knocked out by Tunisia in the round of 16, Huesca announced that Nwakali had not returned.
Nwakali and Huesca were involved in a constant back and forth. The former Arsenal man accused the club of trying to stop him from going to the AFCON, but they denied his claims.
After all of the shenanigans, Huesca terminated Nwakali’s contract in April.
However, the 24-year-old signed for another Spanish Laliga2 side Ponferradina in June.
Nwakali played his first game for the club as they took on Valladolid in a preseason friendly.
The Nigerian midfielder started the game, but his side soon quickly fell behind as Sekou Gassama opened the scoring seconds into the game.
Nwakali was taken off at halftime. But it did not help matters, as Joaquin Fernandez doubled Valladolid’s lead ten minutes into the second half.
Jose Naranjo’s 65th-minute was the only consolation for Nwakali’s side as they fell to a 2-1 defeat, their first in the preseason.
