“He can achieve even more”- Ajax chief affirms belief in Bassey’s ability

The Amsterdam giants paid top dollar to land Bassey from Rangers this summer, and they believe he would fulfill his potential

Ajax technical director Gerry Hamstra has affirmed his belief in the latest signing Calvin Bassey to succeed at Amsterdam.

Bassey became Ajax’s second most expensive signing after his €23 million move from Rangers in July. The Super Eagles star grew in leaps and bounds last season.

He impressed in Rangers colors last season, but the world took notice after his man-of-the-match performance in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich were touted as possible destinations for the 22-year-old, but he opted for a move to Ajax.

The Godenzonen lost their star defender Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United, prompting them to pay top dollar Bassey as a replacement.

Ajax technical director Hamstra believes that the move would eventually yield fruits for his side.

“He may not play in the biggest league, but he did play the Europa League final,” Hamstra told Ziggo sports, as per VI

“He has made a rapid development and we think he can achieve even more.

“We have a wide squad, but he(Bassey) offers us specific qualities.”

Bassey is yet to play for Ajax because of work permit issues. But he would look to settle it ahead of the new Eredivisie season which kicks off on the 5th of August.
