Ajax have closed in on a move for Super Eagles defender after his stellar campaign last term
Calvin Bassey may be an Ajax Amsterdam player in the coming days according to Italian transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano.
Romano on Saturday tweeted about the transfer and said the former Leicester defender may have his medicals done in the coming days.
“Ajax are closing on another signing: deal at final stages for Calvin Bassey from Rangers, €22m fee now set to be agreed!
“Bassey could undergo medical tests very soon, Ajax are on it. Francisco Conceição, Brian Brobbey and then Bassey to follow,” he tweeted.
Should the 22-year-old versatile defender complete the move, he will be playing in the UEFA Champions League, one season after starring in Rangers’ run to the Europa League final last season.
Bassey was voted in the Europa League team of the year and his stock has risen greatly in the last one year.
The defender joined Rangers in 2020 and was taken in by Steven Gerrard after Leicester released him.
Now a full Nigerian international and a mainstay of one of the biggest teams on the British Isle, Bassey with an Ajax move will take another significant step in his coming of age.
He’s seen as a direct replacement for Lisandro Martinez who is joining Manchester United in a permanent move ahead of next season.
