Midweek Matchday in the NPFL brought its own potpourri of spectacle as some teams consolidated on their strong positions while others dipped
Rivers United have proven to be the team of the season in the NPFL as they went 10 points clear on the summit on Wednesday.
They defeated second-placed Plateau Utd 2-0 in Port Harcourt to open a very strong lead with seven games to go in the season. A Chijioke Akuneto brace was enough for the league leaders to strengthen their lead. Akuneto has now leveled with Ishaq Rafiu, also of Rivers United on 14 goals this season.
Enyimba also moved to 4th on the log on Matchday 31 after defeating Sunshine Stars of Akure. Chukwuemeka Obioma and Samuel Stone got the two goals for the Aba Elephants to take them above Remo Stars on the log.
Remo held Shooting Stars to a 1-1 draw in a feisty game in Ibadan in the midweek fixture. The game which saw some crowd trouble after the end of the game lived up to its tense billing but failed to produce a winner at the end.
Sikiru Alimi’s 7th minute penalty was canceled by Ebuka Anaekwe in the 12th minute of the game. Both teams failed to find the winner for the rest of the game.
Lobi Stars defeated Kwara Utd 3-1 in Makurdi courtesy of goals from Chinonso Okonkwo, Olamilekan Adams and Nansen Imenger. Samuel Tiza got Kwara’s only goal in the game.
Christian Nnaji continued his hot streak in the league as he scored twice for Rangers to defeat Wikki Tourist 2-1 in Enugu. Nnaji took his tally for the season to 7 in 14 games played this season.
Katsina United defeated Niger Tornadoes in a Northern derby game while Gombe Utd defeated Heartland of Owerri.
MFM picked an important point away at the Nest of Champions against Akwa United to brighten their chances of escaping the drop.
Kano Pillars are scheduled to face Dakkada in a rescheduled fixture.
