New development in Super Eagles push for 2023 AFCON qualification

Super Eagles may be getting a new opponent in their 2023 AFCON qualifiers as an appeal has swung the nature of the group in another direction

The Nigerian national team may be getting a new opponent in its AFCON qualifiers as São Tomé and Principé have won their appeal against Mauritius.

The CAF Appeals Committee ruled in favour of São Tomé and Principé weeks after Mauritius reported them of fielding an ineligible player.

Both nations had been enmeshed in a controversy some weeks ago with Mauritius granted a place in the biennial tournament.

Sao Tomé have now won their appeal and will be joining Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau in Group A of the qualifiers.

The Super Eagles will face Sierra Leone at the National Stadium, Abuja on the 9th of June before travelling four days later to São Tomé and Principe to face the small island nation.

The top two teams of each group will be heading to the 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire with Nigeria looking to banish the memories of the disappointing outing in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.
