Nigerian duo suffer relegation in Serie A; Super Eagles duo escape relegation in Ligue 1

Stephen Okereke’s goal against AS Roma was not enough to save Venezia from suffering relegation

A difficult season that has seen the Venice-based team win just six times in 37 games has ensured they will be playing in the Serie B next season.

Venezia have struggled all season and were hoping for a last dose of miracle against AS Roma on Saturday.

Okereke’s first minute goal had set the tone for a good evening but a 32nd minute red card for Sofiane Kiyine meant Venezia would do without the ball for majority of the contest.

Roma didn’t get their equaliser until the 76th minute as Venezia brought on Tyrone Ebuehi four minutes later.

Venezia’s relegation fight is sealed as they are currently sitting 20th on the log, four points away from the 17th-placed Salernitana with just one game left.

Still in the Serie A, Ola Aina posted an excellent performance for Torino as they won 1-0 away to Hellas Verona.

Aina, featuring in his 19th game of the season was arguably Torino’s best performer on the night, completing 78% of his passes and winning 8 of his 9 total duels.

Isaac Success was missing for Udinese as they suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Spezia. Success had left the last game crocked with a hamstring injury.

In Porto’s dead-rubber league game after winning the league title in Portugal, Sanusi, still basking in the euphoria of his league-winning goal against Benfica posted another beautiful performance.

Porto defeated Estoril 2-0 in the final game of the season.

In France, Moses Simon was in action for Nantes as they lost 3-2 to Lyon. The Coup De France champions are currently 9th on the log and will play in Europe next season.

With a game to go in the season, the Yellow Canaries’ eyes are set on retaining some of their best players including Simon.

Terem Moffi and Innocent Bonke have escaped relegation with Lorient as they picked a vital point against condemned Bordeaux.

Moffi started the game but was substituted in the second half while Bonke didn’t feature at all in the game.

Moffi has so far scored eight goals and registered four assists with one game still to go.

Sitting 17th on 35 points after 37 games, four points away from the relegation zone, Lorient have secured a place in the French top flight for next season.
