‘He’s meant to be a superstar but has struggled since moving’ – Pundit’s verdict on Super Eagles star

Alex Iwobi left Arsenal in 2019 for Everton after Unai Emery told him he’s surplus to requirement

Skysports pundit, Clinton Morrisson has said the Super Eagles midfielder was supposed to become an Arsenal superstar but has struggled until now at Everton.

Since the Toffees appointed Frank Lampard, there has been an improvement in Iwobi’s game as he’s been deployed in a variety of positions.

Everton will face Arsenal at the Emirates in their final battle for survival but a man who typifies the survivor role will be in the run-in on a ground he stomped and shone but barely convinced.

After moving to Goodison Park in 2019, Iwobi struggled for playing time and form and never hit the level he’s currently managing in his three years at the club.

“What he is doing now is playing as a wing-back,” said Morrison. “When he was at Arsenal, he was further up the field as a winger. Now his defensive duties have been good.

“It has been a big struggle for him (at Everton). But Frank Lampard has found a position for him because sometimes he has put him in the middle as a three. He’s really positive as a wing-back and done well.

“He has got more ability. He should be creating more chances for how they thought he was going to be a superstar at Arsenal and then Everton paid massive money for him to go there.

“I still think there is time for him and it seems as though he has found a position.”
