Extra: Judge says detained IPOB leader Kanu can watch Liverpool matches

A Judge of the Federal High Court, FCT, Abuja has in the spirit of club love given Nnamdi Kanu a chance to watch Liverpool matches while in detention

On Wednesday, Justice Binta Nyako ordered the Department of State Services (DSS) to allow pro-Biafra agitator and leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu to watch Liverpool’s matches.

Kanu’s counsel, Mike Ozekhome had approached the court to complain about the failure of the DSS to give him and other counsels opportunities to see their client. The Judge rebuffed the claims and said she ordered the DSS to allow him change his clothes, allow him feed well and also have access to medical care.

The Judge faced Kanu afterward and said despite her order for him to change his cream-coloured Fendi designer clothes, he still wore the same piece of clothing to court.

She joked about seeing Kanu wear other clothes outside the court – a reference to Kanu’s Atletico Madrid’s tracksuit. The IPOB leader was seen in the La Liga outfit’s sporting wear in a picture taken with the governor of Anambra State, Charles Soludo.

The judge claimed she supports Liverpool and asked Ozekhome about his football club allegiance. He answered ‘Liverpool’ in the affirmative. Kanu was asked what club he supports and he answered he has been a Kop since seven.

“What is your team?” she asked.

Kanu stood up in the dock and said: “My team is Liverpool even from age of seven”

While Kanu didn’t ask to see Liverpool’s games, the judge ordered that the DSS should allow him watch the Reds matches.

“You must allow the defendant to watch the matches any day they are playing,” she said. The judge also added that she will make an order to the effect.

The DSS however stated that they’ve always allowed the detained agitator access to the television.
