‘We deserved the win’- Awoniyi shares thoughts after Union Berlin victory

The Super Eagles star hit a new high with his goal against Cologne, and with his form, he could help the Eisernen to a European spot

Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi feels his side Union Berlin was the better team, and they deserved the victory over Cologne when both teams squared off on tuesday.

Union Berlin’s hopes of qualifying for Europe had started to dwindle in recent weeks after failing to win in four of their previous Bundesliga games. However, they picked up after their performance against Cologne.

Awoniyi continued to soar in the Bundesliga, as he scored his 12th goal of the season to give his side the lead. Then Union Berlin put up a stealthy performance in defence to see out the win.

The Super Eagles hitman believes his side played better football on the night, and they deserved the win.

“It was a great game from us,” Awoniyi told Union Berlin TV.

“We were better in the game than Cologne from the start because we really fought for every ball. That’s why the win is absolutely deserved.”

Awoniyi is enjoying his best season ever. This season is the first that the former Liverpool man would score 12 league goals.
