Super Eagles star set to become Bundesliga club’s highest ever transfer

Union Berlin have never earned more than seven million euros on a player transfer, but all that may change in the summer

German club Union Berlin have expressed their willingness to let Nigerian striker Taiwo Awoniyi leave the club just twelve months after he joined from Liverpool permanently.

But the Iron Ones will only do business with any club willing to part with 30 million euros for the Super Eagles striker.

Union paid Liverpool only €6.5 million euros to sign Awoniyi last summer – a club for arrival to the An der Alten Försterei – after the 2013 u-17 World Cup winner impressed on loan.

That may yet turn out to be the best piece of business the German club has ever done, with a string of Premier League clubs interested in the 24-year-old.

Awoniyi has never hidden his preference for the world’s most glamorous league, and several reports have linked him to Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Southampton.

Should any of these sides cough out €30 million for Awoniyi, the former Mainz loanee would become the most expensive sale Union Berlin has ever conducted.

The Irons’ most expensive departures
are Robert Andrich (to Bayer Leverkusen in August 2021) and Sebastian Andersson (to FC Köln in September 2020) at 6.5 million euros each.

Union Berlin will not block Awoniyi’s dream move to England, with the club’s sporting director Oliver Ruhnert confessing that a massive transfer fee will be difficult to reject.

“It’s a nice sum; I have to say,” Ruhnert told DAZN as per Transfermarkt.

“For us, that would be a departure into a whole new dimension.”

Awoniyi has already smashed in 17 goals in all competitions for the Irons, and, at the weekend, he became the club’s all-time top scorer in the Bundesliga with his winning goal against FC Cologne.
