Flamingoes defeat Egypt to inch closer to World Cup ticket

Nigeria’s female U-17 were in action again at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja

The Flamingoes hosted the Egyptian U-17 on Sunday and took the North Africans to the cleaners as they establish a healthy lead going into the second leg.

The Nigerian girls put four past the Baby Pharaohs with impressive attacker Opeyemi Ajakaye once again amongst the goals.

As early as the third minute, Ajakaye won a free kick on the edge of the Egyptians’ box but the team could not make the most of the situation.

The first goal of the game came from Ajakaye two minutes before the half hour mark as she continued her decent goalscoring run.

Ten minutes after Ajakaye’s curtain raiser, Omowunmi Bello scored a header and the second goal off Fatimoh Adeshina’s corner.

Flamingoes took a strong lead into the first half and started from where they stopped in the second half.

Ajakaye was culpable for missing some begging chances in the game but was a thorn in the flesh of the Egyptians’ defense.

The Egyptians piled pressure but lacked the cutting edge to make a difference in the game.

Miracle Usani made it three for Flamingoes in the 54th minute before Bello grabbed her second of the game eight minutes later to give the Flamingoes a solid four goals cushion heading into the second leg in a fortnight.

Should Flamingoes avoid more than a 4-0 defeat or earn a win in Egypt in two weeks’ time, they’ll face the winner of the game between Ethiopia and South Africa in the fourth and final round of qualifiers for the U-17 female World Cup in India.

The competition has been slated for October.
