Still on Jollof derby – how Nigerians, Ghanaian helped Canada to historic World Cup qualification

As Canada trounced Jamaica 4-0 on Sunday to book passage to their first World Cup in thirty-six (36) years as leaders at the CONCACAF, Nigeria and Ghana prepared to clinch the available ticket between them in Africa.

In what’s been dubbed the ‘Jollof derby’ by fans of both nations, the Super Eagles will host the Black Stars in Abuja on Tuesday with everything – pride, place, power and purpose to play for.

With the first leg in Kumasi ending goalless, both nations are going into the game sure that they still have both legs out. The storm ahead had a calm to present before Tuesday.

On Sunday at the BMO field in Toronto, Canada presented a squad comprising two players of Nigerian descent and one of Ghanaian ancestry.

Hatayspor’s Sam Adekugbe was a delight to see on the left wing of the Canadians throughout their qualifying campaign, and even grabbed vital goals against the United States and Mexico. Formerly declared to play for Nigeria before reversing his decision, Ike Ugbo was left on the bench on Sunday as Canada booked their place to Qatar.

Nottingham Forest’s Richmond Laryea was on the Canadian right-wing in the defense, doing equal damage as the Nigerian on the opposite end.

The Nigerians and Ghanaian are however expected to have their interests clashing when Nigeria host the Black Stars tomorrow at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
