Ike Ugbo, Sam Adekugbe qualify with Canada for first World Cup in 36 years

In September 2021, Ike Ugbo announced that he had switched his international allegiance to Nigeria but changed his mind two months later to represent the Canadian national team.

On Sunday, 27th of March, 2022, Ugbo was on the bench as Canada thrashed Jamaica 4-0 on Sunday to qualify for their first World Cup since Mexico 86.

Goals by Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan and former Blackburn winger, Junior Hoillett gave Canada a strong lead in the game.

Jamaican defender, Adrian Mariappa scored an own goal late on in the game to condemn the Reggae Boys to a humiliating defeat.

It was all joy in Canada as they made it to the mundial again for the first time in 36 years and in eight editions.

Sam Adekugbe, born in the United Kingdom to Nigerian parents was also involved in the game and played from start to finish.

The flying left full-back had a beautiful World Cup qualifying campaign scoring in important games against the United States and Mexico.

Adekugbe, currently with Hatayspor in the Turkish Super Lig is considered one of the most talented members of the squad.

Ghanaian right full-back, Richard Laryea was also involved in the game.
