Euro leagues watch: Simon is brilliant again; Okereke is helpless in Venezia walloping

It was a tale of contrasting fortunes for some Super Eagles stars, and Soccernet has it all covered

Simon saw 90 minutes of action as his Nantes side cruised to a 2-0 victory over Montpellier in the French Ligue 1.

The Yellow Canaries continued with their impressive performances when they welcomed Montpellier to the Stade de la Beaujoire.

The first half was goalless, but it was not without action, as both teams created chances, but they failed to convert their chances.

The second half started with intensity, and Simon could have scored just two minutes after the restart, but his strike hit the crossbar.

However, Nantes found joy in the 69th minute as Randal Kolo Muani met a cross from Ludovic Blas and headed in from close range.

The Yellow Canaries did not relent in their efforts despite the upsurge by Montpellier. Simon was brilliant, helping with defensive work, and looking to pounce on the counter.

The Super Eagles star was hauled in the 90th minute, with coach Kombouare looking to see out the victory.

The final nail was put in Montpellier’s coffin by substitute Willem Geubbels as he scored the second for Nantes in the second minute of stoppage time.

In Italy, it was sore tales for David Okereke, as his Venezia side fell to an embarrassing 4-1 defeat at home to Sassuolo.

A penalty brace from Domenico Berardi and a goal each from Raspadori and Scamacca were enough to see the Alessio Dionisi tutored side through.

Thomas Henry pulled one back for the home side, but it was just a consolation.

Okereke was taken out in the 88th minute for former Manchester United star Nani.

Elsewhere in Belgium, Alhassan Yusuf saw 45 minutes of action as his Antwerp side secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory at home to Beerschot, who also have Nigeria-eligible Ryan Sanusi on their books.

Antwerp were a goal down at halftime. However, Alhassan was hauled off during the break, but his side came back through Michael Frey, who scored twice to secure the victory for his side.

The victory ensures that Antwerp maintain their third position in the Jupiler League while Beerschot languish at the bottom of the league.
