“As wounded lions” – Ghana hero, ex-Chelsea star urge Ghana to make history against Super Eagles

Messages of support and encouragement have continued to flow in the direction of the Ghanaian national team ahead of the crucial World Cup qualifier against the Super Eagles

Former Sunderland forward Asamoah Gyan has charged the Black Stars to go into the first leg of their FIFA World Cup playoff clash with Nigeria like ‘wounded lions’.

Gyan is one of Ghana’s greatest players and the Black Stars’ all-time leading goalscorer with 51 goals. The top African goalscorer in the competition’s history, the ex-Udinese star featured at three FIFA World Cups, and he has urged his compatriots to make Ghana proud against Nigeria.

Gyan wrote on Twitter: “The nation is fully behind you, to make it to the World Cup after all the setbacks is a game-changer achievement for the nation, yourselves & your families.

“Step on that pitch as wounded lions & go make history once again. Go Ghana Black Stars Go for Gold”

Gyan is not the only former Ghana international pushing the Black Stars towards victory, with ex-Chelsea iconic midfielder Michael Essien offering them his best wishes.

Essien, the first African to win the Chelsea Player of the Year Award in 2007, sent the Black Stars a ‘Good luck’ message alongside a video of him scoring against the Super Eagles.

2009 FIFA U–20 World Cup winner and 44-cap Ghana international Samuel Inkoom has added his voice to the growing calls of support for the Black Stars.

The former Basel fullback also wrote on Twitter, “The whole nation is solid behind you guys do not forget let’s do this together. Good luck, guys; we are Black Stars.”

The aggregate winner of the double-header playoff between Ghana and Nigeria will be guaranteed a spot at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar later this year.
