Super Eagles’ Umar Sadiq enters Almeria record books

The Nigerian international led his side to their fourth league triumph on the bounce on Friday night, elevating himself further into the club’s rich history

Super Eagles striker Umar Sadiq was at his magnificent best as he provided a stunning assist before scoring a fine header to inspire Almeria to a dominant 3-1 win over Fuenlabrada on Friday.

Sadiq showed some tenacity to win the ball back from an opponent before making a superb run and delivering a delicious lob for Arnau Puigmal to smash home the opener on the half-hour mark. The visitors equalised five minutes later in what was a rare foray forward.

Sadiq, though, restored the Rojiblancos’ lead in the 66th minute and Dyego Sousa added some gloss to the scoreline 12 minutes later.

But it was Sadiq’s goal that found its way into the record books, as it made the Nigerian forward Almeria’s first-ever player to score in four consecutive league games.

The 25-year-old has been in top form since his return from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, finding the back of the net against Ibiza, Malaga, and Mirandes (twice), before his second-half strike versus Fuenlabrada.

Sadiq’s latest effort is his 36th goal in all competitions for Almeria, pushing him into the club’s top eight all-time highest goalscorer list.

The former AS Roma starlet is still 21 goals behind club great Raúl Sánchez (57 goals). Argentine forward Leonardo Ulloa is in second place (48), Spaniards José Ortiz (47) and Soriano (46) follow while ex-Nigeria international Kalu Uche (45) completes the top five.
