Nigeria-eligible star breaks Henry’s long standing record as Bayern Munich draw at Salzburg

The youngster was unsung for the Austrian champions as he helped his side secure a hard-fought draw that could have been a victory

Junior Adamu broke Thierry Henry’s 17-year record of the fastest substitute to score a goal in the UEFA Champions League after his 21st-minute strike that gave Salzburg a 1-1 draw against Bayern Munich.

Salzburg welcomed German giants Bayern Munich in the first leg of their round of 16 clash in the UEFA Champions League.

The Austrian giants were underdogs going into the tie as Bayern Munich started on the front foot as usual, but Salzburg put up a stealth defence.

However, Salzburg suffered an early setback when forward Noah Okafor sustained an injury in the 10th minute, which ensured that he had to leave the game for Junior Adamu.

Nevertheless, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as Nigeria-eligible Adamu scored just 11 minutes after his introduction.

He received a perfectly weighted pass from Brenden Aaronson to calmly slot behind Sven Ulreich. Salzburg were brilliant on the night, chasing down every ball and putting the Bavarians’ defence on their toes.

Adamu could have scored a second in the second half, but for a block from Lucas Hernandez.

The Austrian champions put on a solid defensive front, repelling all the Bayern Munich attacks. However, they got punished in the 88th minute after Kingsley Coman latched on to a loose ball to fire home and restore parity.

Salzburg held on for the rest of the game to see out a 1-1 draw. The Red Bulls travel to Munich in three weeks for the second leg, and anything short of a victory will send them home.

Salzburg hero Adamu was born in Nigeria to Nigerian parents, but he has spent most of his life in Austria.

He has played one game for the Austrian national team, but he could still switch to Nigeria because he has just one senior international cap.
